6x6 utv Armored Combat Vehicle with heavy weapons
« on: August 22, 2013, 03:19:34 PM »
When I first joined the wonderful world of airsoft, I had always wanted to have some type of vehicle to use in airsoft games. That time has come!

This thread will be about the build progress of my ACV project. There are several main parts that will be posted on here, such as the Main 360 degree turret, forward facing machine gun, "tank" frame, and vehicle repairment itself.

I will be posting the introduction and first stages of this build later tonight.

Lets jump into the main gist of things. Starting off will be the main turret. Now of course this is airsoft, and a large bore cannon wouldnt be too affective if it were mounted horizontally; injury would just be waiting to happen. So I did the next best thing and replaced the design with a M2HB machine gun.

There will be a 360 degree turret up on top too which will allow the mounted M2 to cover any which way needed.
The ACV will also include a mk43 M60 mounted to the front of the car to allow for forward firing cover.

Basically I was going for a armored scout car like this:

The shell of the design shouldn't be too difficult to do because of the vehicle I will be using.

That is a rather old picture of the amphibious utv and it has since received a 4-stroke engine, new transmission, and new tires. And yes its amphibious, so it floats.

So thats it for now. The M2 is actually being converted into a polarstar, so lots of sustained fire to come. One last thing I forgot to mention about the M2 is that it currently is a simfire replica, meaning it has a realistic noise and muzzle flash using propane. If there is a safe way of using the simfire feature and airsoft together, then I will, otherwise it will just be a polarstar.

They has something similar in the LC game this year. Based on the same thing but 8x8.
Looked like it would be fun.

It will be made of plate steel. That photo, ruberup, is pretty interesting!

Steel is pretty heavy, keep in mind the total capacity of the chassis and tires you're using, plus the fact there will be at least two gear laden people, and lots of other stuff.

If it were me I'd go aluminum or even a metal skeleton and fiber reinforced plastic.

Ya, fiberglass is your friend here. Maybe some thin alum.

The picture that ruberup posted was mostly plywood and plexiglass. And even then it drove real slow. It's that damn minigun on top that made it so intimidating.

Ill be going over the final design this weekend with a buddy of mine. I could also use a jeep grand Cherokee as my base vehicle, and can cut that up as much as I wanted to, but would be much more work. I will definitely take into consideration the weight though.

Quick update, the ACV will actually be built very similar to the NBC recon 6x6 vehicle. It will have 30 inch tires as well as a rear hydraulic door. My buddy who is working on this with me, and I will be making the drive train frame and testing the original 6x6 transmission this weekend. We are hoping that the transmission is still in good, working condition so we can keep the tank like drive with zero point turning ability. I will post pictures of the progress after that.

Cheers!

My team back in Ohio has run an APC for a few years now, and we've been refining what works and what doesn't.  Hit me up if you'd like my $.02

Got a good transmission/engine combo in the vehicle now thanks to my good friend WIDOW over on  DeepSouthAirsoft. We had a change of plans and now have a frame together.

WIDOW will be working on sand blasting all the parts including the front differentials and frame this coming week.
