Eltro B8v Nightvision System

Hey there guys!
Wanted to share this beauty.
Bought an Eltro B8v, it will hit my doorway on Wednesday.

I am super stoked for this one, check it out:




There's some 80's for ya!

The scope is of the old "active" type Nv units, and uses an IR spotlight to illuminate a zone for an IR optic to gaze at. It apparently has a quality of image equal to some of the later gen passive units, but, we shall see when it arrives.

Nuke's got an Orion 80-1 which is the later passive starlight scope. 

In service, an infantry section got one of each.   The Orion would passive scan until they spotted something.  The B8V would light it with the active it and send tracers at the target that the balance of the non-nvg equipped troops would then fire on as well. 

That way, you got the best of both worlds.  Passive scanning that makes you hard to see followed by active targeting which REALLY REALLY works well. 

Early on in East Wind 6, a West German 2 man scout section carved a Soviet section apart doing this.  The Soviets actually had gen 2 night vision but did not live long enough to use it. 

You get a chance to get out and try it yet Extrach?

nah, it shouldn't hit my dock till wednesday-thursday.

I did have to mod my cable going from the battery pack up to the scope.  On mine, I was missing the little plugger diddy thing the battery pack attached to so I just made up a deans adaptor for that side and I was off to the races. 

You'll love that monster!

Round 2!
This year I went ahead and bought a set of Fero-51's!



Very similar to the system used on the later scope, but hand held, and not weapon mounted.

I like them a lot as they are very lightweight, and appear to work ok for the Gen they are.


They do not make a Weapon mounted set for the MG42, only stand based adapters as seen with my B8v,

These will let me look, then shoot

Gotta say, I'm jealous. But I have to ask, is the top of your NV scope really the best place to carry your mess kit? ;)

Oh, on the subject, I just ordered a CR123a adapter for my PVS-5b's so my NVGs will be GTG with much less expensive batteries shortly!

Still trying to source a set of COBB helmet mounts for it to make it a bit easier to wield though. Would be nice to get the mount in time, but either way it'll be nice to have the gen2+ dual tube setup running.
