Tru-Hop: Custom made, high performance bucking.
« on: December 13, 2015, 12:50:07 PM »
Hi all,

For the last six months, I've been working on developing a high quality, high performance, all weather hop-up bucking and I am excited to share the outcome with you! I decided to start this project shortly after experimenting with a well known hop-up product known as the R-HopTM. In short, the R-HopTM delivers what it promises, i.e. improved accuracy and range. However, I and numerous others found the installation process to be quite difficult and time consuming requiring multiple patches to get one that works perfect for a first time user. The goal of this project was then to develop a product, completely from the ground up, that would offer equal to or better performance than the R-HopTM except in a drop-in solution.

The answer came in the form of the Tru-HopTM bucking. This hop-up bucking is installed like any other hop-up bucking on the market and requires 0 modification for its use. It significantly boosts range and accuracy for reasons I will describe below shortly. Additionally, this bucking will give consistent high performance results in a very wide temperature range (-50°C to 230°C). This means that you can expect the same range and accuracy regardless if you are playing in cold snow or out in a hot desert environment. Lastly, the material used in this hop-up bucking was chosen from an extensive list of options and was identified as the best choice due to multiple physical properties. One of which is the very high durability that allows the Tru-HopTM to withstand hundreds of thousands of rounds.

The secret to the aforementioned performance boost lies with the concave contact patch inside of the Tru-HopTM bucking. This contact patch was actually designed from scratch and then tuned through numerous redesigns and experiments. The end result is a shape that maximizes performance and is backed by hours of testing. One of the design goals of the internal contact patch was to maximize the amount of surface area that contacts the BB. This design has two main advantages. The first advantage comes from the increased amount of friction over the top of the BB due to a larger amount of material making contact with the surface. This friction allows the user to over-hop virtually any weight BB with minimal pressure from the hop-up arm. The second advantage is related to the first and will be more pronounced in a typical AEG. What happens here is that there is very little loss in muzzle FPS from increasing the hop-up. In other words, you can set your hop-up to the optimum setting for your desired flight path and still retain the full muzzle energy you get at 0 hop-up. The loss in FPS an average AEG typically experiences with increasing hop-up pressure comes from the stock bucking nub temporarily retaining the BB while air pressure is built up during firing. During this time, some air is leaked at the bucking-nozzle interface which leads to less kinetic energy at ideal hop-up. In contrast, the Tru-HopTM bucking allows the BB to pass more freely during firing since little hop-up pressure is required. The air losses at the nozzle-bucking interface are therefore reduced and thus more energy is retained during firing. This all translates to farther range at your optimal flight path.

The second major design goal of the concave contact patch was to boost the accuracy of the airsoft gun. I noticed that the shape of the concave patch changes as hop-up is applied. The final design had to compensate for this change in shape so that proper concavity can be maintained at the optimal hop-up setting. Hours of trial-and-error testing was put into tuning this feature alone so that the compatibility of the bucking was maximized across numerous BB brands. Other features of the bucking were thoroughly studied as well, but I won't go into details here. Simply put, every aspect of this bucking has been designed and tested to yield the maximum amount of performance from an airsoft gun.

I've also decided to go a bit beyond the bucking and designed a companion hop-up spacer that would replace the stock rubber cylinder in a typical hop-up unit. Although this spacer is not a requirement, I have found that additional precision can be squeezed out of your hop-up unit when used in conjunction with the Tru-HopTM bucking. Like the bucking itself, this spacer was also designed from scratch and then fine tuned for performance through trial-and-error and multiple redesigns. The end result is a product that can stand out by itself as an individual contributor to performance.

Due to the internal shape of the contact patch, there are some barrel requirements that must be met. This bucking was designed to be compatible across a large spectrum of barrel brands. However not all barrels will be compatible. To check for compatibility, one must only ensure that the barrel window meets the minimum dimensions shown below. Ideally the corners of the barrel window should be squared, however my team and I have tested rounded corners with success.

Well I tried my best to keep this post short and sweet, so please feel free to ask questions if anything is unclear. I hope you are as excited for this project as I am and thank you for reading through!

Looks interesting, do you have any data on increased distance, fps and accuracy between different hop up buckings vs. the True Hop?  And when are these expected to be out on the market?

I put it on my 509 Prommy under HPA power (110/red).

Unfortunately my available distance to measure (according to google earth) taps out at 240 feet because I live in an apartment complex and have to test from my balcony shooting across the ways.

It sails true to the end whereas my g&g would start to fall off at 150 and my favorite systema at 200 without arcing.
Granted that may be my own failing as merely a decent tech, but take me as the lowest common denominator and it shows the hopups great promise were it put in the hands of an expert.

I will try again to get some fps numbers if I can get some decent lighting for my chrono.
In time, when I get more free time I plan on swapping out nozzles on my pstar to give effective data over as much of the fps range I can manage, having all nozzles.

If I can persuade you in any way Bronze, I wouldn't recommend shooting your gun off your apartment balcony under any circumstance.

Over my balcony from inside my apartment with drawn shades through a cracked door to an uninhabited building across the way---would be more accurate.
I don't take it out in public which is why I'm limited to that distance.

Great question -MAD- SARGE, I have some data I can share. The following was collected on my dedicated testing platform which is a bone stock KWA SR12 with a Prommy 6.03x509mm EG barrel (stainless steel). Range and accuracy testing was performed outdoors and range was measured with a measuring wheel. Accuracy was taken as a fraction of 10 hits on a 13''x18'' metal baking tray and shots were fired from a bench rest position. The range was varied for accuracy testing. Maximum range was found by direct observation of the BB's landing point and at least 10 BBs had to be recorded. Chrono data was collected using a Competition Electronics ProChrono digital chronograph and is the average of 30 shots with a 5 shot warm-up prior to measurement. Additionally, the chrono data is collected with the hop-up set to 0 for consistency in run-to-run.

Prommy + Stock KWA 2GX Bucking = 398 FPS (0.20g, 1.47J), max range = 175' - 200' (0.30g), Accuracy at 150' = 10/10.
Prommy + Maple Leaf 75 deg Bucking = 399 FPS (0.20g, 1.48J), max range = 175' - 200' (0.30), Accuracy at 150' = 10/10.
Prommy + R-Hop w/ KWA 2GX Bucking = 397 FPS (0.20g, 1.46J), max range = 215' - 225' (0.30g), Accuracy at 150' = 10/10, at 200' = 7/10.
Prommy + Tru-Hop Bucking = 404 FPS (0.20g, 1.52J), max range = 220' - 230' (0.30g), Accuracy at 150' = 10/10, at 200' = 9/10.

Also I did test the stock KWA brass barrel (6.05x509mm) for compatibility with the Tru-Hop bucking. This barrel is 100% compatible and clocked in at 333 FPS with a 0.30g BB (1.54J). I had to use 0.30g BBs because I had ran out of 0.20g BBs at the time lol. Unfortunately I did not collect range/accuracy data at the time of the testing. However, I would feel safe to say that the performance is comparable to the Prommy barrel by eye-balling it.

Thanks for the feedback and support Bronze! I'm looking forward to your testing results. Please practice safe testing :)

Sarge/Thor - These are on the market now, thanks for asking!

hmm not bad not bad. so how effective would this be say in a standard brass 509mm barrel that has been polished with regular metal polish and fitted with a prowin hop up.

Hi Wolfenblaze,

That combination you mentioned should be very effective. My team has tested the Tru-Hop bucking extensively on 3 ProWin chambers with excellent results. 1 of the chambers is running a 509mm barrel. Also I saw good results on a stock KWA brass 509x6.05mm barrel as well.
