Yep:  Law of Supply and Demand.  Since 1986, the supply of civilian owned machine guns has been stagnant (illegal to build more for civilian ownership), but the demand only increases.

In fact, there was a dealer (CII/SOT) who would actually call police departments (usually in po-dunk towns) and offer to replace their old M16A1's or AC556's (that were made before 1986) for FREE with BRAND NEW ones.  The police offices would jump at it and the dealer would get transferrable machine guns.  He'd essetially trade them a brand new M16 machine gun that cost him $700 to make and get a $12,000 transferrable machine gun in return.

I think the ATF put a stop to doing this a few years ago.

For machine guns? They'll keep going up.  Machine Guns are regulated under the 1934 NFA.

The AWB has NOTHING to do with machine guns.  Machine guns were banned in the FOPA of 1986.  The NFA of 1934 regulated machine guns and required them to have a $200 federal tax stamp (along with suppressors), but didn't ban them.  It made it impossible for the average citizen to buy them since $200 was a LOT of $$ back them.  That tax never increased though.

The 1936 GCA only regulated machines gun, it didn't stop production or availability.  It's the 1986 ruling that regulates no more imported machine guns available for civilian purchase and no more US made machine guns for civilian purchase.  Anything that was in the US up to May of '86 is legal for anyone to own as long as your state is Class III friendly like Arizona is.  Anything mfg after May of '86 is considered a "Post May Dealer Sample" and can only be sold to Police depts and the Military or exported.  So when you see or hear the term, "Pre May sample" or "Post May sample" that's what this refers to.  My Thompson and UZI are going to be "Post May Dealer Samples" and will be on my friends books.  They will technically belong to him for legality sake, but they'll be mine, all mine!

...and just to clarify:  it won't do anything.

That's one of the anti-gun politician's stumbling blocks that they try to hide from the public.  The public ASSUMES that when the politicians say that if the AWB expires that our "streets will be flooded with UZI's and AK-47's" that they are referring to fully automatic machine guns.  The politicians won't clarify it because the public ignorance only serves them better in this case.

Bingo.
Because when people hear "The Assault Weapons Ban is due to expire," they think that automatic weapons will suddenly be readily available.
