Taking it one step farther, almost every state in the Southwest (that is of course for everybodies favorite gun control advocate, California ( may it die a horible death, and rest in pure torment in H_ll), not only required every man to not only to own a fire arm of some time, but to cary it in plain veiw, while attending any and all social function which may be attended by women, I.E. church, picnics, dances, etc. in case of Indian raids.

One question, what the flingin flog would you need a 50 cal for besides target shooting. If you shot a deer with a 50, the thing would explode. There is no real reason besides target shooting.

I spot another anti gun flamer....

Really though, what do you need an airsoft gun for? Besides shooting each other what are they good for?

Not if it is anything like the government cheese I've seen distributed!

I would just as soon buy my own of the quality and make that I prefer.

You don't need an airsoft gun for a damn thing, but target shooting or shooting other people. The same logic is applied to having your own personal .50 cal. I am by no means anti-gun, after all, I post on this forum. However, some of the pro-.50cal arguments are pretty weak. If it doesn't matter if you use a .50 cal or a 9mm, hunters could use a .30-06 instead of a .50 cal. As I also stated, .50 cal is fine for target shooting, but hunting with a .50 cal is ridiculous. No one does that. Find me one person that does, with a picture, and I will be happy to shut up.

Sorry I dont have a picture, but they use .50's all the time In Africa to take down big game at long ranges. I had a friend I met online who lived in the UK and hunted in Africa during the summers, he said a few guys used .50's. Tough skin needs a tough bullet.

Ya, tough skins of the endangered animals. If you are hunting big game in Africa, there are 2 animals. Elephants, and rhinoceri(sp?), both of which are highly endangered. I have a sneaking suspicion that your "friend" was a poacher. I am not anti-hunting either, by any means. I don't believe that the population of deer is suffering. However, gunning down an animal like an elephant is purely for sport. That is ridiculous.

No, not a Rhinocerous or an Elephant, and My friend is not a poacher, he is simply a crazy fat man from England who likes to hunt. I think he actually used a .50 to hunt Gazelle or something. I will ask him and get back to you. But honestly, fuck the bans on guns, fuck the liberals, and sometimes; fuck the government for pissing on us.

Well I guess you have to shut up now. :)

http://www.ilstu.edu/~taparme/gallery.htm

"9 yr. old Riley again with his first deer - a button buck taken 10/06/01 during the Illinois Special Youth Deer Season. He took the deer at 23 yds. from a ground blind, shooting a 50 cal. rifle he assembled from a kit, with a load of 90 grns. FFFg Elephant powder pushing a .490 round-ball."

50/54/60 cal is very common for hunting Bear, Deer, Elk, etc... Since you did not specify whether it had to be breech or muzzle loaded, I felt this would qualify. Although I do not condone trophy hunting, I believe that hunting to feed your family is much more healthy and humane than the mass production slaughter houses, but that's another issue.

BTW, don't think that muzzle loading is not accurate or powerful. Here is an site of some current ammo used.

Ok, I stand corrected. However, I was under the impression that this thread was referring to a .50 cal weapon such as an M82A1 Barrett. I don't really have a problem with .50 cal rifles like the one pictured.

But it is interesting that the 50cal muzzleloader has killed more people than a breech loaded Barrett... Makes me wonder if morals or money is driving this issue.

I have had to chance to shoot a .50 cal on a long range course and it is really a lot of fun to be able to get a bullet past that much wind, ground effects and the forces of gravity to reach a 1" circle.

As for South Africa, I used to work for a South African who did talk about villagers hiring hunters with .400 and larger rifles to hunt the tigers and other animals to protect their herds.  And yes this comment would lead to poaching but if it is illegal then does it matter if the rifle used is? No, they would just shoot elephants with illegal rifles. And if they didn't have them then they would use a .400 or any number of other guns. However, that issue has nothing to do with the legality of 50 cals.

Well what about the entire M82 series and the M99's in that case then? How about we just ban all rifles, handguns, knives, forks, spoons and shovels. Kalifornia i s bad enough that everyone there has to have a gAyR-15.

Well, I won't worry too much... when Kalifornia falls of the US and becomes an island then maybe we can just do what England did with its criminals and sent all the extreme liberals there.... oh wait they're already there... :)

So basically, you guys feel that anyone should be able to carry any gun that they feel so inclined? Like I said before, I am not anti-gun, I am pro-common sense. A .50 cal for target shooting is fine, but just having a .50 cal for s*its and giggles is just a little bit unnerving. It is also unfortunate that the Constitution has been misinterpreted so many times. The second amendment actually states that you have the right to form a militia, with that comes the right to bear arms. There are other provisions in the amendment as well which I am not sure of. It is much like the line in the Declaration of Independence, "all men are created equal," when in fact it means all white, land owning men are created equal.

This debate has been a heated topic for as long as I can remember, probably longer than I have been alive. To put it plainly I can see all your points.....unfortunately, I can even understand where the gun control activists come from as well,,,,all though they are sadly mistaken and need to be willing to be educated.

Here is my beliefs on the matter.

I believe in: responsible ownership, propper education, a whole lot of common sense, and quality gun control (the ability to hit what you shoot at, when you shoot, every time you shoot), I believe those who break the laws should be punished in such a fassion as the punishment fits the crime (I.E. you shoot someone, you should be shot in exactly the same place, with the same caliber of wepon).

My great Grandfather used to have a saying, "if our grave yards were bigger, our prisons smaller, and our trials shorter, the crime rate in this country would be dramatically reduced."

As far as owning such weapons are concerned, well the constitution of the United States says it better than I could ever say it. "The right to KEEP and BARE arms SHALL NOT be infringed." Well I do not see a list of exceptable weapons here, it is a very vague statement made intentionally. That is because the founding fathers knew that as time elapsed, and new technologies were discovered, then newer and better weapons would be created.

This brings us to towed missile arrays, and thermonuclear devices, should the general public be allowed to own these? Why not? As long as no laws are broken by there owners, as well as propper education and licensing/registration procedures were obeted.

What good use would they be to the private citezen? Simple, if every law abiding citizen in America had a thermal nuclear ICBM in their back yard, capable of being aimed at and reaching oh say Afganistan or Iraq don't you think the bloody
a-- holes that perpatrated the 9-11 attacks would have thought twice before doing it?
