Furst Gun Selected, upgrade advice?

Thanks to everyone that helped me out with the difficult decision of choosing a first gun. I have selected and am about to order a CA M15A4 (armalite) and am ordering it from airsoft extreme.

The question I have now is, in order to get it as close to 400FPS as possible, what are the upgrades I most need to concern myslef with? I am seriosly considering having the people at airsoft extreme do the work, since the "installed" prices only seem to be about $10-$15 above the cost of the parts.

I am completely unaware of which parts most directly effect the FPS, as well as which brands to trust, etc. While we are on the subject, anyone have any opinions about what brand of magazine to use?

As always appeciate everyone's help.

Buy it, use it a bunch, then see if you really need to upgrade it.  Some of the best players I've seen have AEG's barely shooting 300FPS.

Since this is your only AEG, you're going to want to use it in outdoor skirmishes and indoor CQB. It would be best to keep it at its current FPS, that way you will be able to use it for CQB (no one wants to be shot with a 400 FPS gun from 10 feet away).

BS.  We rarely go in the house.  The suggestion to keep it where it's at for awhile is legit however.  Get used to it's shortcomings (compared to a real M16), then upgrade later.

You have to understand Lightning-Man, to some of these dudes "CQB" is shooting into a ruined building from 20 feet outside and yelling "CLEAR CLEAR, ONE UP, TWO UP, GO GO GO!"  Discovery channel and Blackhawk Down special features will do that to 'em. :lol:

I played with a stock TM M4 (276 fps with .20g) for the first 7-8 months with AA.  Needless to say, I appreciated the nealry 100% increase in fps after upgrading.

I appreciate all the feedback, as always.

I am assuming that the vast majority of use will be outdoors, as well as planning that it won't be very long before I pick up either an MP5, or even a gas pistol that would be more suitable for those occasions when CQB is the order of the day.

Here I am, a newbie and already giving advise.  If any of the "Old School" players want to correct me, please do.  

I purchased a CA M15A4 as my first gun.  Great Gun!!! You made a good choice.  Only, do not upgrade the gun yet!!!  I'll let you learn from my experience.  When I first got the gun, the FPS was on the low side so I got a M120 spring to try and bring the FPS up.  WRONG!!  Once I cracked open the mechbox, and replaced the spring, the gears would not pull the piston back and if it did it only went so far then jammed.  After many, many, many hours of trying to get the shimming right and then going to a M100 spring, my gun shoots like a dream!!!!   Also replaced the cylinder, piston to bring up the FPS as my stock parts had NO seal around the piston head.  Also went to a small bore barrell.  

Now, if I were you, I'd not mess with the gear box first, get a small bore barrell, will improve effeciency a little and most of all accuracy.  Then after you have played with the gun for awhile, get a stronger spring.

You know more about what you're talking about than most of these guys with high forum rank.  Post count doesn't mean sh*t out on the field.

Likewise, there are guys that have been airsofting for years that I wouldn't trust with my AEG.

What the big sarge really means, is that we rarely play CQB games.  Too few good locations to go around.  Besides there are velocity reducers you can purchase that attach to the muzzle for those times.

If I were you, I would upgrage after a few games and after you make sure airsoft is something for you. Alot of people say playing with a stock gun is just as fun and stuff as a upgraded gun, but I have to disagree. I can engage targets from 3 times the distance I could with a stock gun and take out more people with less shots. ;)

On a side note...We really should have a game at that bud brown's barn...I never really got a chance to play there and I heard it was great when they did the USAS event a while back.

Good point, Mike.  The TM reducers are great.  I used one at OP RO all weekend, and they barely affect the accuracy of your AEG.  It's what I do for goin' indoors (the whole 4 times I've done it with AA dudes).

So your gun shoots about 400 and can be reduced to cqb-safe velocities? I was under the impression that reducers only helped about 50 fps at most.

Im not sure how effective they are, but I have heard (I have no 1st hand experience) that they lose their effectiveness when firing full auto. Rick

Rick, that is true.  For most games (the ones I have done anyways) we limit indoor action to single shot.
Greg, at OP:CB we did a test for the night game on Jaimes AEG.  It was shooting 372-382FPS.  It brought it down to under 300 FPS.
