Suggestions....

Well I haven't been shooting seriously or often at all in the last three years, however I shot about 3 times a week when I was 13-14 and wasn't all that bad(this was with my real dad) but since I have moved and don't shoot anymore or even have any firearms. I basicly want to get back into shooting again, handguns are my preferance but any blaster is fun to shoot. Since I am still only 16, my options are limited but I have heard that IPSC and IDPA and all that is open to minors as well as the GLock shooting stuff. I kind of need something to shoot first, but I won't have enough money for about 6 months for anything special. Any suggestions from people with EXPERIENCE and KNOWLEDGE is well appreciated. Thanks guys.

So are you looking for a pistol/rifle or an organization to shoot with? Your post is a little unclear.

Both actually, and a Way to legally do it without always having my parents around. I know its legal in Chandler(or Arizona) to have guns with you in your car locked up at 16+ as long as you have written permission from a parent or gaurdian that you are going to a shooting event and back.

I'm pretty sure thats just for a rifle (heck, I think the law is like 13+). Handguns, I believe, you must be 18+, and they must be transported off your person and kept unloaded until your arrival at the shooting area (obviously, once you're 21, this doesn't apply anymore). Thats what I've always been told, so you other guys correct me if I'm wrong. Finally, just realize that you have to be 18 to buy a rifle or rifle ammunition and 21 for a handgun and its ammunition. Course, if the guys at the gun store know you, getting the ammo isn't a problem.

I shoot both IPSC, IDPA, Steel and ICORE, if you are under 21 you need a parent

Sorry man can not be of much help to you, as I am over 21 and do not have to wory about minor laws anymore.

The only time I really shot proffesionaly was as a kid, in fast-draw tournaments. These were geared toward single action revolvers, and I dont think that is what you are after, even so, I have been out of the loop for quite sometime.

As far as just going out to the boonies some place and popping off a couple dozen boxes of ammo, well take your pick. It is pretty much shooter's choice. From an inexpensive stand point, as well as not coming home with a sore shoulder, or wrist, I would use a .22. These weapons are fairly inexpensive to shoot, and most are buit towards the idea of a child is going to be learning to shoot with them, which means that they will take a hell of a lot more punishment than a match grade .30-06 that you went out and spent $1700 or more on.

As far as brands, I am partial to Colt, Ruger, Remington, Browning and Winchester......why, well that is just what I grew up shooting.

Well I know how to shoot, and I am no "Child". If I could handle a Colt .45 when I was 14 I think I can handle it now...

I am sory, I did not mean to imply that you did not know how to shoot.

All I meant was that .22 are designed more for teaching youngsters to shoot, therefor, they tend to take more abuse.

It's alright I just prefer a larger caliber, the recoil/kick is half the fun! I like a challenge, I have actually been checking out the different lines of Rimfire 1911's that Kimber makes but I am sure they are way too much, are there any other .22's that are full size or atleast 4"?

If your looking for a .22 pistol, check a Walther P22 or Ruger MK1.

Personally I agree, if I don't come home with a black and blue shoulder, I have not been shooting, but after a while, it just plain hurts!

I assume you are talking about handguns, I can not remember what the model is called, but ruger has a .22 modeled after the german luger, which is a blast, in both stability, range and accuracy. I believe it is the MK V series, I picked one up at a yard sale one time, and was real impressed with it.

I prefer the single action revolvers myself, or the model 1911 automatics, as my hands are not exactly big enough to wrap around some of the other makes. Especially if you get into high cap mags. I just find shooting them awkword and uncumfortable......and if a .45 will do the trick....as it has proven time after time in real combat, why change?

But I really do not know which way to stear you, especially if you want to go tournament, since most of my shooting is at beer cans and golf balls.

My best suggestion would be to go to a shooting range like High Noon, in Prescott Valley, ( not sure what they have here in Phoenix, if they have anything, as paranoid as everybody is, when you even drive by a gun shop down here ) which rents firearms, and choose the one that fits you, and your shooting style.

Once you have a weapon, I can help you with some things, like up grades and such, to try and get bettter performance out of it, but I am no proffessional by any means when it comes to gun smithing. Infact most of what I know is basic, and I would probably find you a wealth of knowledge, as I have pretty much quit shooting all together, for the last several years. Just got to expensive, and my best friend ( also my step-brother ) died, and I just lost interest in it.

One thing I have found out though, is stay away from non-jacketed lead, as much as possible, even if you are not shooting, it has a tendancy to pit what it comes in contact with, even just sitting in the mag,,,,then again, it is possible the barrels I had were sudstandered as well, I really do not know.
