« on: July 19, 2005, 08:00:48 AM »
Anyone see this story?
Medic gets shot by a sniper, vest saves him, they then shoot and capture the person who shot him, and he treats him.

Yep...seen the video, and had a "disgussion" about the type of round that was fired...the range, and what type of ballistic plates that were used.....(the old thread was removed..apparently)

It was once believed that Chuck Norris actually lost a fight to a
pirate, but that is a lie, created by Chuck Norris himself to lure more pirates to him. Pirates never were very smart.

Too bad. It's his job and he has to do it, and that just goes to show you what kind of people we have in our military, I don't think you would last too long with that mentality.

The rules of engagement DO NOT require medics to treat enemy combatants. There is no law within the UCMJ that requires a medic to do so. Try getting shot and being faced with that decision before you talk out of your posterior cavity.

Doc Hollywood beat me to it.

Sorry I'm not a hardened killer/life saver like yourself. People think they know what they would do in situations, how they would keep calm. But until you are there and are faced with it, just keep your mouth shut when your only 16. Yes, I'm 17, but I'm not telling people what kind of mentality they have.

Believe it or not CNN just showed a story on the incident and the reaction of both the soldier and his family.

They showed extended footage from the video where he's pointing towards the van from behind his vehicle.  Then two HMMWVs come rolling out of the left side of the screen with their crew-served weapons pointed at the van.  All the Jihadis said  was "Get out.  Get out."

Um, incorrect.  Being an ex-medic, we've been taught that the medic is obligated to treat ALL wounded (Article 3, Section 2).  It is in the Geneva Conventions which we are obliged to follow and states: (2) The wounded and sick shall be collected and cared for. An impartial humanitarian body, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross, may offer its services to the Parties to the conflict.

However, there is a caveat.  Special forces units are not under any such obligations.  Also, there is nothing that say's the medic can't treat HIS people first.  ;)

Oh, of course nothing say's the medic can't defend himself or his patients.  As an interesting note, there are many Medal of Honor reciepients that we're medics.  ;)

I am (was - but you never loose it) a combat medic as well. The geneva convention obligation (I wasn't there and didn't sign it by the way) would not apply until the wounded became a prisoner. So long as he was considered an armed combatant he gets dead. My medical obligation and triage order was limited to: first, my team, second, other friendly troops, third, civilians. But then in the 80's we were not a "touchy feely" kind of army.

Well, like I said, there's nothing that say's he can't treat his team first... and then the enemy.  ;)
