Not to take anything away from the STG's or MP's but the M1Carbine is considered by most experts to be the first true modern assault rifle, according the the current standards...

Experts cant change history. The Mp/StG was the first assault rifle, ergo the M1 was not.

As I was aware, an assualt rifle was designated as a rifle that had a full auto capability.  I dont think the M1 meets those requirements.

And it uses a CLIP!

The M1 Carbine uses a magazine, the M1 Garand uses a clip.

There are M2 and M3 carbines as well.  The M2 is an select fire version of the M1 carbine and the M3 is an M2 with a mount for an IR night scope, similar to the German Stg44 "Vampir" setup.

And you all know what the M4 carbine is.

None of this really has anything to do with the topic, but hopefully it is rather interesting. :)
