Headets and Mics
« on: August 28, 2005, 10:32:56 AM »
Does anyone have any experience with the Firefox throat mics?  http://firefoxtechnologies.zoovy.com/product/ff-p
I have heard some good things, but I'm also a firm believer in you get what you pay for.

What are some popular choices of headset/mics around here?  I'd actually would prefer not to have a throat mic.

Thanks for your time and help,

I'm not familiar with the Firefox, but make sure before you order that the plug is either a one-or-two pin where it fits into your radio.

As a warning, a lot of what I've heard about Firefox stuff revolves around their products being just repackaged radio shack-esque lower end items.  Not that they won't work for you, but that you might be able to acquire the same thing at a much cheaper price.

I think the simplest, most reliable setup is using a speaker mic paired with an earbud.  The speaker mic hooks into your radio, which is in a pouch on your back or side, then the mic is on your non rifle side shoulder with the Earbud plugged into that and going to your ear.  With this setup, you're not broadcasting the radio messages into open air, so its quiet.  You can unplug the earbud if other people around you need to hear whats coming across the radio.

Examples -

Such as this:

Or this:

Paired with something like this:

or this:

Pryme stuff is good stuff.  There are other companies, too, like Motorola.  If you're going to do something like that, make certain the items are specifically for your radio and that the speaker mic has an audio output jack (usually 3.5mm female jack)

Hope this helps.

I run a speaker mic setup like Raith suggested.

It works fine for me, both with and without an earbud.

Some of that cheapass commo stuff can give you nothing but problems.

I have a firefox, and it works great. The only issue is that is can be picky about your radio, so once you buy the throat mic, test out some radios just to find the right one.

Sinjin, Was  the IXradio ear piece you were using at the Nov 19th Op? You seemed to like it, has it worked for everything you needed? - Joseph

Kobo,
Yep, the IXradio is the exact model I've been using.  Inexpensive, great sound clarity and easy to use.  I give this product a thumbs up.
