Late night fun!
« on: October 08, 2005, 02:25:46 PM »
Here is some interesting ballistic results we obtained on a late night of shooting. All of these were targeted at a mild steel cube measuring 6" on a side.

These strikes were from a .223 AR-15 at 100ft:

These were from 9mm and .45cal rounds at 50ft:

This hit was from an AP round fired form my M1 Garand cal .3006 it penitrated 1.29 in. into the block before stopping:

This is a .223 shot from 100ft at a .5 in. mild steel plate:

Just something I had lying around the workshop and thought it would be fun to shoot at.

A more beautiful gun I have never beheld. As Raith put it, "Just holding it realy gives you an added apreciation of WWII vets". It is big and heavy but firing it always puts a smile on my face.

Now if only the amo wasn't so darn expensive!

Garands are fun to shoot, and give you a better appreciation of a true "battle rifle". Probably no rifle has been better loved than the old M1. Personally, I'll take my M14/M1A nowadays (cheaper ammo/more available ammo, even more reliable, and a detachable magazine). Still, I'll never forget the metallic cling of the stripper clip popping out after the last round!

pretty cool. Would've been interesting to see what a 50 could do to it...

A website that does tests like that is theboxotruth.com

Their articles are pretty good. They do a lot of shooting tests on things, and get rid of myths about certain cartridges and things like that.

A .50 cal round will shatter upon impact into water within 20 ft.

That's not a 6x6 solid cube of WATER now is it, Mythbuster?

A .50 Ball round probably would not do much more than make a half inch dimple.

A .50 AP round (of any type) is something I'd like to see as well!
