No more meet and caravan for me
« on: November 12, 2005, 11:57:25 AM »
I've had enough of the "caravan from the meeting palce" idea.

Let me relate a little story why.

Today we all met up at the Conoco and head out from there at about 7:30, we're all on FRS channel 4, and i'm behind a blue jeep to the front and a silver truck to my back.

The front 3/4 of the caravan is cruising along through the hills at around 75. Well sorry, my old dodge has a tough enough time doing 55 up those hills (If you want to complain about this I suggest YOU pay to buy me a new car). All I heard on the radio tho was "Tighten it up", well to me that would seem to indicate that the first person in the caravan needs to slow down to keep everyone together, since the whole idea is to try and make sure nobody gets left behind.

But eventually the silver truck behind me and the car behind him pass me.

We get close to the sunflower turn and we notice "aren't those our guys heading back the other way?" So I jump on the radio to find out what's going on.. dead air.. try to raise anyone.. dead air.. finally I hear "*crackle* four peaks *crackle*".

Of course by this point we're a good 5 miles behind everyone else, I can't raise anyone on the radio and what's worse, not me, nor stormfire nor our passenger has any idea where the Four Peaks AO is.

So we head back down, and after 2 1/2 hours of trying to find the group (all the while trying to send out calls on FRS channel 4 and getting no answer) we head home.

This isn't a new issue, someone seems to get left behind each time we go out, but nobody seems to want to do a damn thing about it, I just hear "Oh, make it to the meeting place and you'll get there".

Frankly the next time a game goes down you'll see me at the AO, not at the "meet and greet". And i'll be posting Maps and directions on the thread, along with signs at the turnoffs.

If you're paranoid and don't like that, tough luck, i'm sick of people getting left behind.

A quick Tutorial on running a Caravan.
« Reply #1 on: November 12, 2005, 12:42:26 PM »
There are just a few simple steps to running a successful caravan.

None of them are difficult, so it's amazing how often they don't get done.

1. Be sure that everyone in the caravan knows the route and destination.

2. Be sure that the person in the lead does not go faster than the slowest person in the group. (And that, by definition, means do not go over the posted speed limit, as there are some people who can't afford to get a ticket)

3. In this age of cellphones, ensure that everyone in the group has the leader's cell number, in case of trouble. Radios are a great idea, and work well in flat places, but not on twisty mountain roads.

4. If for some reason, the destination or route has to be changed, pull over and stop to be sure that everyone in the group has the updated information.

Airsoft is not illegal, immoral, or shameful.

Why all the secrecy?

That sucks, folks. I can certainly relate.

Next weekend there's a game at Four Peaks. I have been assured by SINJIN that he'll be tailgunner. Nobody gets left behind.

Lasivian, I don't blame you for being pissed.  At the last game, my friend and I had to really speed up just to keep the convoy in sight.  At that game, Mooncruiser couldn't keep up with anybody and didn't make it to the game, at this one you and your buddies got left behind.  This is some major bull$***.  Maybe if some certain people followed stormfire's (excellent) advice, things would run a bit smoother.

Mooncruiser, I'll probably be going to the game next week too.  If you want, I can PM you my cell # so you have a contact if we caravan out and it all goes to shit again.

Well, I overslept for this game, decided it was too late to go when I woke up. HOWEVER I also have a slow car, it only goes 45 up hills. I am glad I did not go, because I too would have not kept pace.
As I was not there I cannot complain, however, I have to say that I have attended a game at Florence and the pack of cars went down the dirt road at 70mph, NO way I was going to try to go that fast in the dust with a deep canel off to one side, and never have went down the road before. Fortunatly they did slow down for some reason at one point and I caught back up, otherwise, I too would have missed a game.
So those who lead the pack, Airsoft is about organization/rules/honesty...etc...so lets look out for all those who want to play, after all gas aint cheap, and a trip for no reason is frustrating.

well... If you where heading back to conoco from BT you would have seen the huge sign saying "Four Peaks" and you follow that road all the way to the end. Its not like we went to some unmarked place. Both BT and Four peaks have road signs...

We tried the Four Peaks road.

Went back about 5 miles, on both forks (Which fork did you take by the way? there was no sign saying "Four Peaks Airsoft Site" on either fork, and how far back what fork, 5 miles, 10? We wasted 25$ in gas searching for you as it was.).

Asked all the the ATV riders we could find if they had seen you guys.

Even tried the Pathfinder AO to see if you'd gone there.

Finally gave up after more than 2 hours.

But then I should have just read your mind to know exactly where the Four Peaks AO was that we weren't going to in the first place.

Right?

I wouldn't be nearly so pissed, except you changed AOs in the middle of the damn caravan, if I hadn't gotten the crackly signal I would have had NO idea where you'd gone.

But then that's my fault too, right?

Give me a F-ing break. You guys abandoned us, and you know it.

Consider yourself lucky.

I've seen it happen at three games so far.

And i've only been to six.

To get to the Four Peaks, do you guys go up Dynamite to rio verde?

If so, anyone think they can give me a ride up there with them to the next game? I live on Happy Valley and 112th.

Thanks!

Bullsh*t, nobody else complained about the speed and it was more like 45mph, quit whining.

The problem was that BT was closed due to fire danger. (It threw everyone for a loop, and had there been a place to stop and talk it out, it probably would have been done, but there was a line of 7 cars that was about to back up into the highway, so a fast decision was made.) Believe me, ask Cochise, my car can't go more than 55 up those hills either, but that is why I headed out first to get a little bit of a lead on everyone else, by the time I had reached the top of the hill, I had everyone in view behind me. In addition, for future reference, any AOs along the 87 will be well marked road signs, at least as far as I am aware of. However, I am in agreement that the caravan was moving way too fast.

Like I said before, the destination was changed because BT was closed. It was not a decision made on a whim. Like I also said before, there was no safe place to pull over.
