My AK...
« on: January 23, 2006, 07:09:03 PM »
I had plans to upgrade.  do you guys think it would be worth it?

i was gonna start out by replacing the gearbox with an all metal one, including performance piston and spring (maybe a 120?) and high torque motor.  also maybe a longer performance barrel and a mock suppressor (to cover the extra length).  top it off with a folding bipod, and rail for scope attachment.  yeah.. turn it into an automatic sniper rifle or something   :P

what do you think?  where can i find these upgrades?   :?:

I think that it will make one bad ass AK...

What kind of AK is this that you don't have a metal gear box?

You can check out http://www.wgcshop.com to start checking out your selection.

You could get an SVD conversion kit and a POSP scope. That would be really neat.

Its probably a UTG AK47.

Since AKs are awesome guns, you don't need to do all that you jsut said you watned to do. Here is all you need to do for any AK variant.

1.) Get a 120 spring
2.) Have a high output 8.4 battery
3.) Get a tightbore of the appropriate length, no more, no less.

This will give you a badass AK. My AK47B has these things, and it is a great gun. Ask anyone who has used it(Woody, Phx_Cobra). It will not fail you.

I could sell you a full metal Tokyo Marui AK beta for like, $225, with a rail on top, CA gears, and a 110 spring. PM me if you're interested. Might be cheaper than having to retrofit your UTG AK47 with a new gearbox and all that, and if you want to get to the higher FPS', you might need a metal body. If it is a UTG AEG, my first advice is to get a better base gun. They say you can change the gearbox, but, I dunno. Seems kind of like a waste of money after having to buy a whole new hop and such.

Well, the gun is made by Matrix, a chinese based company that supposedly makes Tokyo Marui replicas.  My AK is exactly like the TM one but has fewer matel parts (which i may change) and a plastic gearbox that is completely identical to that of a Version 3 gearbox.  The simple fact that my gearbox now is plastic means that if i put an upgrade spring in it, theres a good chance it may crack or strip the lil plastic gears... fuck plastic shit, lol.  Anywho... but yeah... i jus thought it would be neat to have an AK Assault/Sniper rifle out there on the field, just to have something different and fits my style.

Please correct me if i am wrong about what i said about the current gearbox in the gun.  but i am sure that i would wanna upgrade from a metal box instead because of its strength.

Oh, and everything else about the gun (like the hop-up) is high end, so like, if i put the hop up all the way on, it jams the gun because the gearbox doesnt have enough power to push the bb through the hop up (thats what i was told)

That's cool. My offer still stands, make me an offer I can't refuse. I wouldn't say the hop-up is high end at all, putting the hop up all the way on just does that sometimes. I would venture to say the hopup is less effective than the SRC one, but, if I were you, I would look into a KM Enhanced hop for 400FPS guns. Neat stuff.

Good luck trying to find a drop in ver. III gearbox anywhere!  I've been looking for a couple of months and nobody has them available.  If you find a source please let me know.  Tigerman was also looking for one for his G36.

That gun is not really meant to be upgraded.  If you want to get a gun that will shoot well and upgrade it,  buy Vince's AK B, you will not regret it.  Or any Tokyo Marui gun for that matter.

What makes it not able to be or meant to be upgraded?  It's compaible with marui parts because it is nearly identical to it....  as far as i know...

It'll cost you more to upgrade it, then to buy an already upgraded gun.

Thanks for the post about Airsoftshop, Nil8r, but here's the reply I got from them back a few weeks ago:

"Hello!   Sorry this mechbox is out of stock now
thx
Airsoftshop.com"

SilentDragon...I've gotten the same response from WGC, UNC, Den, etc., etc., etc.  Finding one actually available for a reasonable cost just doesn't look possible.  Maybe look for a busted up AK and canabalize it?  JT in Tucson says they expect to have metal ver III boxes made by SRC available in a month or so for about $100.  We'll see what happens.  Right now, anyone getting a Matrix and expecting to easily upgrade it is in for a surprise as far as I can tell.  BTW, I agree, why isn't this gun made to be upgraded any more than other guns?  Externals are fine; how can a mechbox changeout not be possible?  Sounds like you already have the gun, so you're stuck just like me.  If we knew then what we know now, we'd think Vince's offer was something to really think about.  Good luck.

There is more involved than you think Stryker. to change the mechbox you need to consider what effects it may have on other systems, e.g hopup, triger placement, selector switch. all things that stay external but interact delicately with the mechbox. I tried at one point in time to put a TM mechbox in an ICS gun, it worked all right but still had a few problems, and those two are even closer in design than the one you are taking about. Perhaps it is hard to find those parts because everyone has the same idea as you. Some things with arisoft you just can't cut corners with and expect to come out ahead of the game. Get a proper AK, and do not worry about it.
