Airsoft incident

I just heard about an incident involving the use of an airsift gun.  Medic1 (Danny) told me this story today after i gave him the directions to the Conoco where we will meet for tomorrow's game.  

Apparently, someone had an upgraded gun capable of shooting over 400 FPS... 425-430 FPS (to be more precise) was what the gun was shooting.  Well, the gun had been rendered "faulty."  While looking down the barrel with the safety "ON,"  the gun decided to fire.  No, he did not have any safety glasses on.  The projectile went through his eyeball, and i believe he also said that it hit the brain.  The guy died at the hospital.  

Very sad story for the victim.  But i hope that this will encourage the use of eye protection, whether you are playing on the field, or just handling a gun.  And, unless the battery (or whatever the power source may be) is removed, as well as the magazine and any remaining BB's in the chamber... DO NOT LOOK DOWN THE BARREL.  But of course, that is Common Sense.  Very unfortunate, but this could have been avoided.  You can never be TOO careful... and beware of a faulty gun!

This is precisely why most of us use the same safety rules for real weapons with Airsoft weapons. Very sad story indeed!

He did everal things wrong, and paid the price.

Unfortunate that not everyone who owns a weapon is familiar with the proper handling rules.

Yeah, even with the battery out, the spring can still be compressed and if the tooth on the gear or piston gives way...

I doubt the gun was "faulty" in any way, shape, or form. This sounds like pure negligence on the part of the user. I find it amazing that the blame sounds like it's being placed on the weapon itself, and not the many, MANY mistakes leading up to this event. Keep this in mind and always remember to practice proper safety techniques.

That really sucks man

but hopefully that accident will just encourage people more to use eye protection at all times

even when target practicing

There's many versions of that story floating around online.  It was believed to be a rumour as nothing documented ever surfaced.

I heard of a guy that was running around the house and accidentally fell and repeatedly stabbed himself to death.

I don't know how possible it is, but there are two fissures in the back of the Eye socket, they house nerves that go to the eye.  I guess it might be possible, but probably not.

Here is a picture of the anatomy of the skull with the major blood vessels.  The bb has a velocity of 286 mph (based on 425 fps),
to cause death it would have to have severed a major vessel or paralyzed a section of the brain responsible for breathing.
