Schools of Sight(for Newbs)
« on: April 15, 2006, 01:48:05 PM »
Hey all,

In the time that I have been playing I have only used Iron Sights, but have recently began messing around with other sighting options.

I would appreciate any advice from people in the know about other options.

So far I have gained the following info;

Ironsights-Tried and true, always the same, but slow target aquisition because you have to line up 2 points.

Co-Witness-A combination of Ironsights and Optics.  If I shot real firearms this would be my choice, but it seems too "busy" for airsoft for me.  Yet if optics go down then you still have sighting options.

Optics only-I am leaning towards this path.  Fast target aquisition and simple.  But I don't want to teach myself bad habbits.

Please weigh in and let me know what you think!

I've got a G&P red dot scope I hardly ever use, if you get the G36 up and running, I'd be more than willing to let you go a few rounds with it mounted.

i like to use my scope on my G36, its only a 1.5 but i love it. but when i go prone or go to support i use the iron(really glass fiber if you want to get tecnical) sights.but i might soon replace it with a reddot (casue i'm makn an MG36)

What you want to do is use a scope with some sort of flip up sights or at least rear flip up iron sight. That way if your main scope goes down you have back up sights. You always want to have backup sights on a battle rifle with electro-optics.

Sorry I didn't put hip shooting on the poll Sten

If I put a rail mount on the handle of my M15 it would leave the Iron Sights fully functional, but would put my red dot or whatever alot higher than I thought would be good.

Are there any out there that run optics on top of the carry handle, and if so what do you think are the +'s and -'s?

Thanks,
Charlie

Running any sort of optic on your carry handle is a lame idea. It's for people who are stuck with A2s.

Just run your optic mounted at a correct height on the receiver, with some sort of folding rear sight.

I personally perfer iron sights myself. Mainly because Ive used them for so long on real firearms, it only comes natural to me in the airsoft world as well. The uses of optics for me is only with my really high power stuff, like .375 H&H mag.

Also, For the most part, Im always afraid that if I drop a rifle with a scope or a red dot on it, it may nock it off zero. For the most part, iron sights have a better chance against this.

We're talking about airsoft though, Vincent. We need minute of airsoft, not minute of angle. :D

Non-magnified optics enhance the look of the rifle and allow quicker target acquisition.

I dont think optics were meant for being placed on top of a carring handle, but that's just me.

I used to use a red dot IER scope with my iron sights mounted as a back up.

The optics on the tops of carying handles was a solution for weapons in transition periods before they comitted to rail topped uppers. It was never meant to be a final solution to the problem of mounting optics.

As for my opinion of the topic at hand, I love my EOTech, I like the ease of target aquisition that I get with it and the skill of keeping two eyes open that it has forced me into practicing. But... it has batteries and those batteries have not had the best reputation, and as an opic with glass it can be broken (however difficult). I am nto a big fan of using my optic with a rear sight obstucting the dot, but I do recognise the need for iron sights to be on my guns always. I like having flip up irons (or at least a rear flip up) and running an optic unobstructed.
