I'm looking into getting one Ganef.

Which one would you recommend?

As for me, I like optics.  I do however have BUIS just in case something should happen.

Getting one what, an EOTech or a back-up iron sight?

As far as that goes : 512 or LaRue.

I was talking about an EOTech.

Thanks Vince.

I forgot you had one not too long ago.  Sold it didn't you?

But I was looking at the 512 that accepts the "N" batteries.

I had an EOTech but sold it because I sold my AR. I might buy another one. They're the best sight there is.

The N battery like, isn't worth it -- they're harder to come by and more expensive.

EOTechs -

550 Series -

551 - N Batteries, NVG Compatible
552 - AA Batteries, NVG Compatible
553 - CR123 Batteries, NVG Compatible
554 - AA Batteries, NVG Compatible (Same as a 552)

510 Series -

511 - N Batteries, No NVG Modes
512 - AA Batteries, No NVG Modes

---

You're unlikely to find 553s or 554s for sale anywhere.  The 553s aren't quite out yet, and the 554s might be stolen.

If I remember correctly, the AA versions have about twice the battery life of the N battery versions.

My preference is for the 512.

If you're going for realism, optics with a BUIS is the way.

I don't even have a FSP on my SAW and I still pwn!

I just have the standard iron sight on my mp5.  It works well enough for now but I am thinking about getting a red-dot, or maybe an acog if they weren't so expensive.

I try to shoot with both eyes open because I find that it helps with target acquisition (at least wiht real firearms anyway), but sometimes I revert back to the old close the off eye habit that I learned as a little kid.

With iron sights, it's easy to acquire targets with both eyes open.  One eyes sees down the sights, and the other looks along the side of the gun at the target ahead.  The sights will seem "transparent," if you will.  The use of a sling to help keep the sights lined up makes target acquisition quick and easy.  Hover the "transparent" sights over your target...

I'm not against optics or anything.  I've honestly hardly ever used them.  To me, it's main purpose is to do the same thing the iron sights do... isn't it? Aim?  Just my $ .02...

But using a red dot will allow FASTER target aquisition. Put the dot on the target, no matter the angle and you will hit your target, if its sighted in. With iron sights, you have to line those up.

Co-witness, its as easy as that.

In addition to fireheads comments, illuminated optics help with target aquisition in low light scenarios without the use of weapon mounted illumination (flashlights) giving you a good edge on the competition.

And the caption for that pic reads....

"Motherbird, target acquired... and fire... Martian down!"

And yes Farslayer, you are right about he night situation w/ iron vs. optics.  There are, as with all things, pro's and con's to everything.  What matters, is how it is used...
